ACCU-PROBE

A Versatile, Low-Cost, Fixed Position Sensor and Display

he NDC Infrared Model 1000 Series AccuProbe provides basic, accurate, continuous, and reliable basis weight or thickness measurement of plastic sheet, film, coatings, nonwovens or composite web products. A small measurement probe mounted on one side of the web is interfaced to a compact display unit. This panel-mounted electronic control unit (ECU) displays the instantaneous basis weight or thickness measurement directly in engineering units, i.e., oz/yd2, grams/m2, mils, etc. Other functions include data communication to host systems, high/low limit alarms, shutter stauts and multi-level passcode protection.

Theory of Operation
The measurement technique is based upon the Compton Photon Backscatter principle (commonly called gamma backscatter). A low activity radioisotope in the probe emits low-energy gamma rays which are collimated and directed at the measured material. These gamma rays interact with the product, lose energy, and are then scattered back toward the detector in direct proportion to the mass of the measured material. An efficient scintillation crystal/photomultiplier detector converts the backscattered gamma energy to photons of light and ultimately to a digital signal which is directly related to product weight/area or thickness (assumes contact density). Unique to the gamma backscatter sensor is its insensitivity to product color, composition or opacity changes.

Features

  • One-sided contact or non-contact fixed position measurement.
  • Continuous digital readout of weight/area or thickness
  • Insensitive to changes in product color, composition, or opacity
  • Easy to set-up and operate
  • Serial communication RS232, RS485
  • 4-20 mA (non-isolated) analog output
  • Programmable recipes for targets, calibration parameters, alarm limits, etc.
  • Simple installation in tight spaces
  • Reliable, easy to maintain

Benefits

  • Improve product quality and uniformity
  • Reduce raw material usage
  • Reduce scrap and product change times
  • Improve production efficiency

Description

The NDC Model 120 affords simple, reproducible and reliable measurement of ultra-light aqueous, solvent and thermoplastic coatings. The NDC Ultra-Violet Fluorescence (UVF) sensor operates by adding a minute amount (0.01 - .05% typical) of a fluorescent tag to the emulsion, solution or thermoplastic coating. The sensor measures the amount of the tag that is present after the coating is applied. Measurement is made in a backscatter mode from the coated side of the web. Coatings can be measured wet or dry. Typical tags have a fluorescence efficiency of 95% when exposed to ultra-violet radiation. Excitation is accomplished by a bright, efficient and safe, non-nuclear source. Data is rapidly sampled and converted to display of engineering units such as g/m2.

Theory of Operation

Light emitted by a mercury lamp is filtered and collimated. The light passes through a beam splitter and lens, and then onto the product to stimulate fluorescence. Fluorescent light emitted by the product is collected by the same lens and re-collimated. This light passes through a beam splitter and filter tuned to the primary emission wavelength of the particular tag used and is focused onto the signal detector. A small portion of the ultraviolet light from the mercury lamp passes through a beam splitter and is separately detected by a reference detector to compensate for lamp intensity fluctuations. The reference and sample signals are combined, filtered to remove the effects of ambient light, and processed to produce a sample coat weight.

CONTACT CQLIPER SENSOR MODEL 360

A Scanning Contact Sensor for Sheet Processes

The NDC Infrared Model 360 Eddy Current scanning caliper sensor is designed for on-line thickness measurement of continuous web processes. The upper sensor head, containing a precise Variable Impedance Transducer (VIT), rides on the surface of the product and senses the distance to the lower reference head. The measurement is always representative of actual product thickness and inherently insensitive to product composition, color or density changes.

The NDC Infrared Model OSA family of O-Frame scanners provides the ultimate in high speed traversing for the Model 360 measurement sensors. Scanners are compact and offered for a full range of web widths.

¡¡

Theory of Operation
The Model 360 sensor is based on Eddy Current Technology employing a VIT. The product to be measured rides between the "active" upper head and the lower reference head. A magnetic field is created between the upper and lower sensor heads, which in turn creates a voltage that precisely relates to the distance between the two heads. As the material to be measured lifts the upper active sensor the VIT in the upper sensor measures the change in sensor separation. This is connected to the local demodulator electronics unit that produces a linear voltage output proportional to the sensor separation. This voltage is then converted into a differential frequency signal proportional to voltage. This conversion is done in the sensor head demodulator to insure a noise free signal and is then sent on to the gauge electronics for processing in the system display and control console.

Features and Benefits

  • Absolute thickness measurement
  • Non-Nuclear sensor technology
  • Measurement range from 20 - 200 mil (0.5 - 5mm)
  • Long-term stability and repeatability
  • Unaffected by changes in product composition, density or color
  • Compact, rugged and easily maintained
  • Unique lower reference head design eliminates errors relating to product listing
