On-Line Measurement of Web Thickness or Basis Weight

The NDC Infrared Engineering Model 300 family of beta transmission sensors is designed for on-line thickness or weight measurement of continuous web processes. The sensors include a range of minimized activity sources, each selected for a specific web measurement application.

A revolutionary feature is a proprietary ultrahigh efficiency detection system which provides the highest precision ever offered by an on-line nuclear gauge, This unique detector is coupled to an exceptionally stable preamplifier and digital converter, both resident in the detector head. This design insures a noise-immune and drift-free digital output to a host computer. Fast sensor response time and high speed data processing enable fine resolution at maximum scanning speed.

These technical breakthroughs permit the use of reduced activity sources, the wave of the future for industrial gauging worldwide. This translates into minimum radioactivity in a compact head design and facilitates global acceptance by nuclear regulatory authorities.

All of these unique features combine to enable the Model 300 to outperform all competitive beta sensors.

Theory of Operation

bts300sensor

The measurement technique is based upon the absorption of beta particles (high energy electrons) as they interact with the web. An isotopic source of beta particles is housed in a fail-safe assembly above the web while a proprietary beta particle detector is maintained opposite the source housing on the other side of the web. As the mass of the web increases, more beta particles are absorbed by the web resulting in a reduced detector output. This output is then linearized and converted to a very precise measurement of web basis-weight or thickness.
