Model 310 Filler Sensor NDC Infrared Engineering logo

Determining Filler Content in Paper

Inorganic fillers are an important ingredient of the paper making process, in order to achieve  properties such as opacity, printability and gloss. For consistent quality, accurate measurements of these compounds are essential.

The NDC Model 310 uses a low energy x-ray source designed for the on-line measurement of filler constituents, also known as ash. This sensor works in tandem with a beta sensor on an "O" frame scanner where the x-rays are preferentially absorbed by the filler to arrive at a precise measurement.

An Fe-55 source is used to emit low energy x-rays through the sheet to determine the mass of the filler being used. A reading is taken with the shutter open and the shutter closed to check the sensor stability and the measurement is made utilizing the Beer-Lambert absorption equation.

With the filler constituents known, the NDC Model 310 has been proven to be a reliable performer in achieving optimum results.
